Governor Pat Quinn has signed legislation clearing the way for direct flights from the Quad Cities to Washington, DC. The Chicago Democrat says getting those daily flights has been a priority for several years. One of the region's largest employers is the US Army's Rock Island Arsenal, which manufactures government-owned weapons. Quinn says the move will help establish businesses and create jobs. The legislation expands air carrier recruitment grants to provide seed money to make the flights possible. It's part of a larger legislative package that functions to implement the Illinois budget. Quinn has not yet signed or vetoed the $35.7 billion budget that lawmakers approved in May. His office says he'll take action on the budget before July 1.
