The Illinois Secretary of State's main computer briefly stopped working, halting transactions for about three hours yesterday. Department spokesman Henry Haupt says a failed power generator is to blame. Transactions like car license renewals and corporate filings were halted during the outage. The mainframe computer connects the agency's offices in Springfield with dozens of driver's license facilities across the state. The Bloomington office stayed open, but employees couldn't perform any work involving the computer.
