Union Vows To Take Unit Five Mass Firing To Supreme Court The decision by the Unit 5 school board to fire over 50 bus drivers and workers is the culmination of the district's effort to eliminate union representation. That's what the regional director of the union representing them says. AFSCME's Kent Beauchamp says it's a trend that's destroying the American middle class:

"Frankly there's companies out there, there's not one job that anybody does that another company won't agree to do for less money. And the way they do it is by driving down the wages and the benefits of the people that perform the work, and that's exactly how First Student intends to make a profit off of this."

Beauchamp was at the school board meeting where the decision was made, and says the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees is appealing the appellate court decision that enabled the school district to engage in the mass firing. If that fails, he says the union will take the issue to the Supreme Court.
