The Democratic candidate for Congress representing much of central and southern Illinois says there needs to be a change in leadership at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Speaking before a Memorial Day parade in Bloomington, retired Madison County Judge Ann Callis said she's talked with many veterans in the 13th district who say Eric Shinseki needs to step down as VA Secretary.
"I was able to start the first veterans court in the state of Illinois so I've worked with veterans and gotten to know a lot of veterans including my son. So, if you're not up to the task and can't do the job, I think there should be a change."
Callis' son Elliot joined the Army last year and is currently deployed to Kuwait as a ranger. Callis' opinions on Shinseki's fate differ from others in her party, including Illinois Senator Dick Durbin and President Barack Obama. Callis' chief opponent in the fall election is incumbent Republican Rodney Davis. The 13th district stretches as far north as Bloomington-Normal and to metro-east St. Louis to the south and includes Champaign-Urbana as well as Springfield.
