The Environmental Protection Agency wants public comment on a proposal to designate the Mahomet Aquifer System as a sole source aquifer. Illinois Senator Dick Durbin has been urging the EPA to stop the construction of an industrial waste facility on top of the Mahomet Aquifer since 2008. Residents in McLean County met in February to gain support to stop the landfill from being built. The Illinois EPA approved the location of a Clinton Landfill over part of the water source, which stretches across 13 counties in central Illinois. Public hearings are being held today and tomorrow. People can comment on the proposal through the EPA's website.
