The only woman to serve as Mayor of Normal has passed away. Carol Reitan was elected mayor of Normal in 1972 and led the town for four years. As mayor, she introduced the city manager style of government that is still used today. After her time in local government, Reitan moved on to co-found the Collaborative Solutions Institute, a non-for-profit organization that helps at-risk youth and adults. Director of the McLean County Museum of History, Greg Koos, says Reitan had a hand in dozens of movements in Normal.
"Carol Reitan was a person who had so many good ideas that most of us wouldn't have a lifetime in which we could play those out. And in her span of time, there is so much that she did that has had a lasting impact on the community."
Normal recently honored Reitan by naming its new conference center in Uptown Normal after her. Reitan was 83. Among survivors are her husband Earl and two children.
