Colleagues of a Chicago children's doctor killed in Afghanistan say he often convinced young doctors he trained that the financial sacrifice was worth the privilege of helping the world's neediest patients. Dr. Jerry Umanos died this week when an Afghan security guard opened fire at Cure International Hospital in Kabul. Dr. Wayne Detmer of Chicago's Lawndale Christian Health Center, where Umanos worked, says Umanos recognized similarities between practicing community medicine on the city's west side and in Afghanistan. Umanos' tireless commitment and enthusiasm for Afghanistan persuaded others to volunteer there. They say he knew the risks. Cure International spokesman Ben Martin says two other Americans killed were Umanos' guests at the hospital. The U.S. Embassy in Kabul says the family has requested privacy and their names will not be released.
