McLean County's first ever Hindu temple opens this evening with a public celebration that continues throughout the weekend. Temple President Bob Mundlapudi says Hindus previously had to meet in each other's homes or travel outside the twin cities to worship as a community.
The Bloomington temple has been in the making for nearly seven years. Located on Tullamore Avenue just off Ireland Grove Road on the far southeast side of town, the building contains eleven shrines, two classrooms, a kitchen and an performance stage. Its million-dollar cost will be paid off through donations from the Hindu community. Mundlapudi says non-Hindus are welcome at any time to visit the temple or experience the worship services there.
