A proposal to devote $100 million in state construction funds to help land President Barack Obama's presidential museum and library will be the focus of a legislative hearing. The Illinois House's Executive Committee is scheduled to meet today to discuss the measure. It's sponsored by House Speaker Michael Madigan and state Representative Monique Davis, both Chicago Democrats. Madigan says it's important to make a strong financial commitment to honor the legacy of Obama, who got his political start in Illinois. At least six sites, most on Chicago's South Side, want to become home to the library and museum. Hawaii and New York also are vying for it. The $100 million for construction costs would be part of a new capital construction plan, which the Legislature still must approve.
