Authorities say restored daily passenger rail service between Rockford and Chicago could begin operating next year. The state of Illinois is contributing $223 million for the project. Officials say the once-a-day Amtrak service will eventually expand to two round-trips along the Union Pacific line. The route will also include stops in Elgin, Harvard and Belvidere. Rockford resident Dyanna Chandler tells the radio station that she was one of the last passengers to ride the Rockford-to-Chicago train 33 years ago before the route was scuttled. She says she hopes to be on the inaugural trip next year.
