A group of doctors in central Illinois is opening a cadaver lab where high school students interested in careers in medicine can take part in dissections. The lab will be open to students in advanced anatomy and biology classes. Dr. Tom Pliura heads the McLean County Medical Society, which is sponsoring the project. He says "not every kid is cut out for this," but he says its valuable experience that no one else in Illinois is offering to high school students. The medical society has received its first cadaver, and Pliura hopes to begin after-school dissection labs on April 10 at his office in LeRoy. Pliura says expected physician shortages make it important to inspire young students through projects like the lab.
