Colleges campuses in Illinois would be completely smoke-free under legislation that passed the Illinois House yesterday. Smoking indoors is already prohibited in most places in Illinois. This new ban would also cover outdoor areas of state-supported universities and community colleges. Democratic Representative Ann Williams, of Chicago, says her proposal is aimed at improving public health:
"This is an important initiative to make sure that more and more people aren't devastated by the impacts of second-hand smoking. And frankly, the science supports this a hundred percent."
Critics repeated many of the same arguments they used against the indoor smoking ban a few years ago. They say smoking regulation is better left to local control.
