Every Champaign County Democratic ballot cast in last week's election is being recounted because of potential problems with tabulations for some unopposed candidates. About 8,500 Democratic ballots were cast during the March 18 primary. The recount was ordered because of errors tabulating votes for some unopposed district committeemen and precinct committeemen races. Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulten acknowledgs the errors, which he blamed on a "ballot design issue" thanks to additional white space that prompted voting machines to misread certain races. Hulten says he hopes the recount can be finished by this afternoon.
