The Illinois AFL-CIO is asking a state investigator to prohibit gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner from contributing to his own campaign. The labor union asked the state executive inspector general to review the $5 million Rauner has contributed for violations of the state's procurement code. The Republican venture capitalist from Winnetka was chairman of GTCR until October 2012. It invests state pension-system money. The procurement code prohibits businesses doing work for the state from donating to the campaign of the officeholder in charge of the contracts-- in this case, the governor. The ban lasts for two years after a donor leaves a company. A Rauner spokesman says the effort by allies of Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn is ``beyond the point of desperation.'' The primary is March 18.
