The two candidates seeking the Republican nomination for Illinois treasurer are touting different skills as they vow to help fix the state's financial mess. Former House Republican leader Tom Cross cites his years of legislative experience. DuPage County Auditor Bob Grogan highlights technical expertise as an accountant. Cross of Oswego has wider name recognition and raised six times more campaign cash than Grogan. But complicating Cross' bid is his recent vote to legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois. Grogan of Downers Grove has not made it an issue, though a downstate GOP official says it could have an impact among more conservative primary voters. The treasurer is tasked with investing more than $15 billion in taxpayer dollars, helping citizens manage finances and managing a college savings program.
