Illinois American Water says water service has been restored to most of the roughly 10,000 homes and businesses in Peoria that lost service when a water main broke. The water company said Monday afternoon that all but about 20 customers had service restored. But customers within the affected area will have to boil water for 36 hours. Illinois American spokeswoman Karen Cotton says about a fifth of the utility's 50,000 local customers were affected by the mid-morning break. Peoria has about 115,000 people. Cotton says the company hoped to have the work done by Tuesday afternoon. She blamed the age of the 70-year-old main and cold weather for the break. Hospitals, some schools and some offices of Caterpillar Inc. all lost or had reduced water service during the day Monday.
