A several year fight over a landfill expansion to include chemical hazardous waste in DeWitt County will have another stage. State Attorney General Lisa Madigan has appealed an Illinois Pollution Control Board ruling allowing Clinton Landfill, Inc, owned by Peoria-based Area Disposal to add chemical waste, including cancer-causing PCBs to what was formerly a municipal waste landfill. Madigan says the company should have received local approval first, before the state signed off. She also says if chemicals were to leak outside the site, it could jeopardize drinking water supplies for the area. The landfill sits on top of a large underground pool of water called the Mahomet Aquifer.
