Illinois' lieutenant governor is planning to speak out on behalf of school funding reform today. Carbondale Democrat Sheila Simon will appear at the Legislature's Education Funding Advisory Committee meeting Monday in Waterloo. The committee is tasked with proposing changes to the state's current way of allocating money to schools. How much state money schools get is currently dependent on the value of property within their districts. Simon says the current system is "inequitable and needs to be changed." She calls the dialogue between educators and lawmakers "an important step toward creating a sustainable funding model."
