After Freeze Thaw Brings More Problems

Utility workers in Illinois say they're preparing for potential water main breaks as the state begins a gradual warm-up after a deep freeze. The ground's freeze and thaw causes the ground to shift. That puts pressure on water mains and can cause the pipes to burst. Ted Meckes is Springfield's utility's water division manager. He says the snow that's on the ground in many communities can make it harder to find and fix the broken water mains that are often buried beneath frozen soil. Weekend temperatures are forecast to climb above freezing, which means more mains could break.
