A Bloomington-Normal institution is closing its doors next week. Elmo Quinn or his father and uncle have been operating Quinn's Full-Service Gas Station on North Main in Bloomington since 1941. At the end of the business day Tuesday, Quinn will lock the doors for good. Quinn, who turns 74 next year, says that sounds like a nice age to retire.
Quinn purchased what was then a Texaco station across Chestnut Street from Holy Trinity Church in 1978. It had been owned by his father and uncle who were twins. Quinn began pumping gas there in the 1950s. With the closing of Quinn's, now a Shell station, only one other full-service gas station remains in the twin cities. That's Wink's Service Station on West Market Street in Bloomington.
