Whether it's a tornado, like the one that hit Washington Illinois a month ago, abuse, or poverty, there are a lot of things that can lead to childhood trauma. Now work is underway to better education parents and community leaders about the issue. Anne Studzinski is with the Illinois Childhood Trauma Coalition. The says anyone who goes through a catastrophic event can develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. But she says the emotional and physical toll is a lot worse for children:
Studzinski says that can lead to problems in learning, behaviour, and health that can have lifelong effects. The Illinois Childhood Trauma Coalition develops ways to deal with PTSD among children. A recent survey shows one quarter of Illinois children suffer at least one trauma.
