The Town of Normal will see an increase in property taxes in the 2013-2014 fiscal year. Last night the Town Council voted unanimously to pass an ordinance authoring a higher Property tax levy. City Manager Mark Peterson says the average taxpayer can expect a property tax increase of less than two percent...

"I think there's a lot of misunderstanding about the extent of this, the impact of this property tax increase on taxpayers. Unfortunately, that's probably our fault. This eleven percent number --people just assume 'My property tax bill is going up eleven percent.' That's not the case."

A public hearing lasting almost an hour preceded the vote. After the hearing, Councilmen spoke to resident concerns. Councilman Kevin McCarthy says he has heard split opinions from the community...

"So one of the difficult challenges for all of us is to balance all of those voices. To do what Mr.Fritzen put very eloquently: Look down the road, try to take care of our community and your investments as best we can with the information that we have today, and make a decision."

City Manager Peterson says under the levy, the average owner of a $150,000 dollar property would see a tax increase of about $5 dollars.
