The Pantagraph newspaper has lost a member of the paper's founding family. 85 year old Davis Merwin died at home Monday. Merwin was publisher of the paper from 1968 until 1980. He was also active in conservation efforts, support of the arts, and higher education. Illinois Wesleyan President Dick Wilson calls Merwin a loyal and generous man. A floor of I-W-U's Ames Library is named after Merwin.
Merwin is part of the Jesse Fell family. Fell, who founded Illinois State University also became sole owner of the Pantagraph in 1868. Before becoming publisher, Merwin worked the desk at the paper doing everything from obituaries to covering the state beat.
