Illinois fire officials are reminding parents of fire-safety rules while their children visit haunted houses this month. State Fire Marshal Larry Matkaitis says such "special amusement buildings," are often built of temporary, flammable materials.
Larger buildings must have sprinklers. All buildings must have an adequate number of exits of proper size. Dead-end pathways are restricted and stairs must be properly constructed. Furnishings and decorations _ including draperies _ must be flame-resistant. Children should be accompanied by an adult. They should wear fire-retardant clothing and masks that do not obstruct vision. Costumes should have reflective material and be loose so warm clothing can be worn underneath.
Adults should point out exits to children and should tell them to meet at a designated area outside the building.
