State officials have announced nearly $10 million in grants for municipalities to improve local transportation, including $6.4 million for eastern Illinois communities. Gov. Pat Quinn detailed the grants today during stops in Urbana and Tinley Park. The money comes from his Illinois Jobs Now capital construction program that began in 2010. The money is going to municipalities in the following eastern Illinois counties: Champaign, Coles, Cumberland, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Effingham, Ford, Iroquois, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby and Vermilion. About $3.4 million in grants is going toward Chicago's south suburbs. Towns can use the grant money for any local transportation needs, such as repaving a street or fixing a curb or gutter. Quinn spokesman Dave Blanchette says each municipality's sum is in addition to its motor fuel tax revenues received annually.
