Unit 5 school board members have signed off an a $149.2 million budget for the current school year. Most of that amount, $96.3 million, falls in the education fund line of the budget. That line has a $5,000 surplus, while most of the other funds are at a deficit. The budget is not much different than the proposed spending plan offered over the summer. School board members also heard from unionized bus drivers, who urged the district to return to direct hire of bus services. Last year, Unit 5 opted to outsource its busing operations. That led to an unfair labor practices complaint by the union, which won a favorable labor relations board ruling. The school district is appealing that decision.
