An ISU Political Scientist says Congressman Rodney Davis faced something of a dilemma in a recent vote on defunding Obamacare through the threat of a government shutdown. Davis is a Taylorville Republican who espouses bipartisan rhetoric, but voted with House conservatives on the issue. Lane Crothers notes Davis has opposition within his own party.
"For almost every Republican out there these days the only meaningful question is are you going to be primaried from the right, are you going to face a challenge from the right wing in the primary season, and if you don't win the primary, you can't get to the general election."
Crothers also says in a district that Davis won only narrowly last year, the pressure from within his party to move right may make it more difficult to win a general election.
