Fulton County officials say corn syrup leaking from a tanker car that fell into the water upstream may have caused a fish kill on the Spoon River in western Illinois. Officials say hundreds of dead fish washed up on the river's banks near Bernadotte. Illinois Department of Natural Resources fish biologist Bob Hilsabeck says reports of dead fish first came in Saturday. He said a count found about 400 fish lining a more than 1,000-foot section of the river had died from an apparent low oxygen level. Crews from the Keokuk Junction Railway, the owner of the derailed train, were at the site late Monday to clear the fish. Hilsabeck says the Illinois EPA has requested use of an air pump to alleviate low oxygen concerns.
