More details about ornate renovations at the state Capitol are drawing criticism from lawmakers at a time when Illinois already has massive financial problems. the nearly $50 million tax-payer funded renovation includes $160,000 for sculptures and $323,000 for chandeliers. Chicago Democrat state Senator Patricia Van Pelt says she's embarrassed by the spending especially as Illinois has a nearly $100 billion pension problem. Other renovations have already drawn criticism from Governor Pat Quinn and candidates seeking office in 2014. They've blasted the $670,000 price tag for copper-plated doors. House Speaker Michael Madigan's spokesman says the doors are designed to make the building like the original construction. The Capitol is a National Historic Landmark. Capitol architect J. Richard Alsop III confirmed the new details last week.
