This August was the third driest August on record in Illinois. Illinois climate experts say the statewide average precipitation for August is 1.38 inches. State Climatologist Jim Angel says August's precipitation was 2.22 inches below average. Illinois saw its driest August in 1952, when it rained just 1.12 inches. August of last year saw precipitation of 3.64 inches. Angel says only far southern Illinois and portions of northeastern Illinois saw significant precipitation during the month. He says there were some areas in western Illinois that received less than a tenth of an inch of rain. August's statewide average temperature was 73.1 degrees. That's just 0.4 degrees below average.
