After watching their efforts fizzle in the Illinois Legislature this year, gay marriage advocates are changing their game plan. The revised campaign is calling on unions and using messages of personal stories rather than tying the efforts to civil rights. Advocates say they picked up the formula from activists who made Chicago a key player in the push for immigrant rights. Social justice movements often borrow tactics from one another, but experts say the crossover happening in Illinois stands out among the 13 states that have legalized gay marriage. Same-sex marriage advocates plan to push new legislation this fall in Illinois. But opponents, including a coalition of black pastors, say they'll keep up their fight, saying it'd be wrong to redefine marriage.
