Illinois House Minority Leader Tom Cross hasn't made his bid for treasurer official yet, but his potential candidacy is already drawing criticism from a Democrat seeking the office. Cross told House Republicans yesterday he's stepping down from his House leadership post soon and considering a run for state treasurer. He says a formal announcement will come in two weeks. Democratic state Senator Mike Frerichs is running for state treasurer. In a statement, he calls Cross a "Springfield insider" for two decades who contributed to the state's fiscal crisis. The race will be wide open as Treasurer Dan says he's seeking the Republican nomination in the 2014 governor's race.
Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Schillerstrom has said he's running for treasurer.
