A northern Illinois historical society is getting ready to unveil a statue of a young Ronald Reagan after years of trying to raise $50,000 to pay for the project. The Tampico Area Historical Society will unveil the statue this fall. The Illinois native was the nation's 40th president. The piece depicts Reagan as a boy, playing with a cannon that was once across the street from his home in the Whiteside County village. Organizers spent years trying to raise $50,000 to pay for the piece, sculpted by Iowa artist Ted McElhiney. No date has been set for the formal unveiling, but the statue should arrive in Tampico next month.
Tampico has about 800 residents and is about 40 miles northwest of Moline.
