The McLean County Clerk says she'll seek a second term in office next year. Kathy Michael says she wants to manage both the clerk and Recorder of Deeds office, after voters approved doing away with the Recorder's position, effective at the end of the year. Michael says the biggest cost savings is realized by the Recorder's nearly $100,000 salary going away. But she says there are other opportunities to save taxpayers money by combining the posts.
Michael was elected to the Clerk's office in November 2010 after defeating longtime incumbent Peggy Ann Milton in the spring Republican primary. No other clerk candidates have emerged. Current Recorder of Deeds Lee Newcom, who will be out of a job at the end of the year, has not indicated whether he will challenge Michael in next spring's primary.
