The last time Dick Diedrich saw his high school ring, Harry Truman had not yet moved out of the White House. Then about 10 days ago, the 82-year-old Diedrich and Doris, his wife of 60 years, got a call from Mike Geiger of Waukesha, Wisconin, saying he'd found a ring from J. Sterling Morton High School in Cicero while using a metal detector near his home. Geiger had done some research and learned there were two members of the school's class of 1949 with the intials `R.D.,' including Richard ``Dick'' Diedrich. He telephoned them and mailed the Mattoon couple the ring that had disappeared in 1948. That's when his then-girlfriend Doris put it on a shelf while washing her hands.
