The Town of Normal has awarded Citizen of the Year to former Illinois State President Al Bowman and his wife, Linda. Normal Mayor Chris Koos says Al helped strengthen the relationship between ISU and the rest of the community, which has put it miles ahead of other university towns. He also says Linda was crucial to the development of the new Children's Museum and its mission going forward.
"They've just been overall community boosters, and have done a lot to raise the awareness of Normal in the state and in the region," he says.
Koos says the city usually nominates only one person for the award, but they believed they should recognize both Bowmans.
"It is unusual that we would pick two people," he says. "They worked as a team and as a pair, husband and wife. They worked very hard for the community."
ISU's Board of Trustees will honor the Bowmans during a private event in Normal tonight. Last year's Citizen of the Year was Myra Gordon, who helped found the Ecology Action Center.
