Bloomington Firefighters Awarded For Life Saving Bravery Bloomington firefighters are being recognized for their life saving efforts at a home fire this spring. A Valor Award, the highest award given for risking your life to save another, goes to Acting Captain Steve Zimmerman, Engineer Lance Benedict, and Engineer Steven Petrovics. It's the first Valor Award ever for the department. In addition a Bravery Award goes to Captain Parrish Brown, Engineer Gary Gundy, and Firefighter Tim Baer.
In mid April the Bloomington Fire Department responded to a house fire at 404 E Lafayette Street. Despite wind blown flames, Zimmerman, Benedict, and Petrovics were able to pull 86 year old Helen Chapman from the building's second floor.
Paramedics found a pulse on the woman, and she was taken to the hospital. Chapman is still recovering from her ordeal, thanks to the fast actions and bravery of all who answered the call.
