One of the Democrats seeking to unseat incumbent Republican Rodney Davis in next year's congressional election has the full backing of the powerful Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. New York Congressman Steve Israel chairs the committee and says southern Illinois judge Ann Callis is being put on the committee's fast track.
"When you're a judge, you can't be about ideology," he says. "You have to be about fairness, and so we're very excited by Ann Callis. She was added to our jump start program. She's one of the top-tier candidates around the country because she is a quintessential problem solver."
Being on the jump start program means Callis is receiving additional support from the DCCC, and it shows the confidence the national party has in her ability to unseat the first-term incumbent Davis. Callis is the only announced Democrat seeking the nomination in Illinois' 13th district, which stretches from McLean County down to the metro east area of St. Louis. U of I physics professor George Gollin has also expressed a desire to run.
