The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has set up a website to provide information about a central Illinois landfill that could one day store toxic waste. The landfill is atop an aquifer that provides water for about 750,000 people. The EPA website provides information about the Clinton Landfill in Clinton and its plans to store PCBs over the Mahomet Aquifer. The landfill is about 40 miles west of Champaign, while the aquifer stretches across central Illinois from roughly Peoria to the Indiana state line. A number of local governments, state lawmakers and area institutions oppose the plan. They fear the site could contaminate the water below.
The landfill company says it would install a liner that would protect the aquifer.
