Amtrak ridership between St.Louis and Chicago is still growing, but slower in recent months. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari says while growth in the first six months of the budget year was 2.3% that is steady improvement. Magliari says at some point the current system will "max out" and will require more cars and expanded tracks.
He says Amtrak has already served 363,000 riders this year between Chicago and downstate Illinois. According to Amtrak President and CEO Joe Boardman the continued growth on routes in Illinois and across the nation underscores the need for continued federal financial support as congress debates the transportation bill later this month.
