For more than 30 years voters in the central Illinois township of Chillicothe sent Ruth McLaughlin back to her trustee seat. A new term was almost a given. But 97-year-old McLaughlin's three-decade run in politics came to an end Tuesday when she suffered her first loss. She finished fifth in an eight-person race for four seats. McLaughlin says she is not disappointed. She says it's like baseball: "If you win, you win. If you lose, you lose. That's it." Now she says matter-of-factly that she'll just have to find something else to do every second Tuesday of the month. She says she and fellow trustees enjoyed being involved. But she says they always tried to have fun with the job, too.
