Illinois officials say March was firmly rooted in winter after last March's record-setting warmth. The Illinois Water Survey says that the average statewide temperature last month was 34.1 degrees, Seven degrees below the long-term average, and more than 21 degrees colder than the record-setting figure a year ago.
Snowfall was above average for the month after a major storm blanketed central Illinois with as much as 17 inches of snow. But the Water Survey says the statewide average of 2.9 inches of precipitation was just below the long-term average of 3 inches.
