A new report shows 16 cities in the greater Peoria area gained in new housing construction permits from 2011 to 2012, a sign of economic recovery. The numbers come from a survey of 25 cities in western and central Illinois. Sixteen of the cities saw growth in 2012 in single-family and multiple-family construction permits. Five rural communities on the list, however, saw a decrease from 2011 to 2012. Overall, permits in the 25 cities more than doubled from 219 permits in 2011 to 440 in 2012. The report looks at a decade's worth of data, finding a widespread regional slowdown in home building during or following the recession.
