Students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus have agreed pay a $50 annual fee to help pay for the $160 million renovation of the Assembly Hall. About 54 percent of the students who voted in a campus election this week voted for the fee. It will be assessed beginning in 2014, and is expected to generate up to $61.5 million during the 30-year life of the bonds used to finance it. The university is planning to upgrade the 50-year-old Assembly Hall by adding luxury boxes, air conditioning and other features. The bulk of the work is expected to be paid for through private fund-raising and selling naming rights for the facility.
