IL house committee approves same sex measure

Wed, 27 Feb 2013 04:18:28 CST

Same-sex marriage advanced in the Illinois House yesterday, but backers say they don't yet know whether they have enough votes to pass the measure. Ryan Cannon-Scott of Peoria County says she got a civil union with her partner, Daphne Scott-Henderson, last year. But they still have problems when Daphne takes their son Sebastian to the doctor:

"There are always issues, even though it's supposed to be on record that she can make medical decisions for Sebastian as his parent. She always has to verify who she is, and they always want to call me to confirm."

That's why she told an Illinois House committee they should allow full-on marriage for same-sex couples. The measure was approved on a 6-5 vote that was mostly partisan, with one Democrat voting no. The legislation's sponsor, Representative Greg Harris, a Chicago Democrat, says he's still working to get his colleagues on board. The measure's already passed the Senate. If the full House follows suit, Governor Pat Quinn says he'll sign it into law.
