Homes in west Bloomington could benefit from the new West Bloomington Home Revitalization Project. The effort is targeting exterior home repairs, including gutters, fences, and painting. Jennifer Long is an Illinois Wesleyan student who's interning at the West Bloomington Revitalization Project, the effort's parent organization. She compares this initiative with a more familiar one:
"It's a little bit like Habitat for Humanity, and they have a similary program, "Brush with Kindness," and this is similar. There is a modest financial responibility, the sweat equity will come in about 20%, uhm, of the volunteer labor from the homeowner."
Long says they hope to work on ten owner-occupied homes this year, and later expand. The initial money for the project comes from the PNC Bank Foundation. Long says they're also seeking city money. She says a recent survey showed 2/3rds of the buildings in west Bloomington need exteriour work. Homeowners will have to kick in labor, and cover around 20% of material costs. Applications are now available at the West Bloomington Revitalization Project at Allin and Washington Streets.
