The leader of thousands of central Illinois catholics says he was shocked to hear Pope Benedict XVI would resign his papacy at the end of the month. Peoria Diocese Bishop Daniel Jenky says in a release that he noticed Pope Benedict looking a bit more tired recently. The Pope cited health reasons and advancing age as primary reasons for stepping down. Jenky met Benedict several times, most recently a year ago. He calls for all catholics and "people of good will" to pray for the Pope's health and for the guidance of those selecting a new pope. Jenky says the resignation is a "great loss to the Church." The Peoria diocese serves 26 counties in Illinois and nearly 250,000 catholics.
