Peoria's unemployment rate edged upward in December while jobless figures in Bloomington Normal and much of the rest of the state fell. The Department of Employment Security reports the 6.3% unemployment rate for the twin cities is down more than half a point from the same month in 2011. Peoria's rate in December is 8.3% Department Director Jay Rowell says the economic recovery could be compromised if Congress is not seen as working together to build a solution. In the twin cities the Financial Activities and Leisure and Hospitality sectors added jobs. In the Peoria area there were large temporary layoffs in Manufacturing and losses in retail trade and construction. Two sectors made gains in Peoria: Education and Leisure and Hospitality.
