Every Wednesday morning before school, Metcalf Elementary students are getting a lesson in sustainability. Parents and children meet at the Coffee Hound in Uptown Normal before walking across Illinois State University's quad to school. A parent organizer of Walk-To-School Wednesdays, Barbara Simmons, says the goal is to promote exercise and teach kids that walking is a viable option.
"At Metcalf, we drop our kids off right at the front door. They're not walking to a bus. Most of them aren't riding a bike to school, they live to far away and are spread out. So this is just a great way to get the kids all in one close location that we could walk them over."
Simmons says the effort will hopefully teach kids to use the buses when they're older, rather than hop in a car by themselves and drive around. And with weather in the teens, she also says this will teach the children how to dress properly.
