A coalition of cities including the Town of Normal has formally asked the EPA to designate the Mahomet Aquifer as a sole source for drinking water for the region. The group hopes that status would help fight the hazardous waste landfill at Clinton. A sole source designation would require review of any federally funded projects over the aquifer to make sure they do not pose a threat of contamination. The coalition expects the review to take at least six months. The central Illinois underground water supply would be the first sole source aquifer in Illinois if approved. The group of municipalities claims the aquifer provides nearly all of the drinking water for the region and supports thousands of industrial and agricultural water users.
